Carpet quality is primarily verified through test data, but these practical checks help buyers assess products on site:

Pile density

Touch the carpet surface: high-quality products feel full and dense under hand, with good resilience, walkability and durability. Avoid choosing tiles by long, fluffy pile alone—it may look soft but often means loose density, pile collapse and poor performance under foot traffic.

Colour fastness

Rub the surface repeatedly with your hand or a cloth. If colour transfers, fastness is poor and the carpet may fade or bleed during use, spoiling the finished look of the installation.

Backing peel strength

Tufted tiles bond a grid backing with latex adhesive; the standard requires peel strength of at least 25 N. Gently try to peel the backing—weak adhesion means separation in service and shorter life.

Visual quality

Check that the face is flat, edges are straight and there are no stains, spots or shade variation. For tufted tiles, inspect the back for delamination or adhesive bleed that can cause buckling after install.

Material and manufacturing process ultimately define quality—good specs show in durability and finish. Price reflects this: premium products rarely sit at the bottom of the market. Choose established manufacturers who can supply test reports and technical support.

What is ASTM E84 Class A

ASTM E84 (Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials) rates flame spread on interior finishes. Class A is the highest class (Flame Spread Index ≤ 25) and applies to most commercial and public floor applications. Fire inspections require matching test reports.

Why carpet tiles need fire certification

Offices, hotels, healthcare and education spaces need safe egress. Modular tiles are still assessed as floor coverings even though they install in small modules.

Verify test reports

Match product model, size and backing in the report to delivered goods; check validity and lab accreditation. Burgunie provides ASTM E84 Class A technical data for BR series.

Recommendations by space

Open office and corridors: BR002, BR003; hotel lobby and lounge: BR001 organic texture. Confirm with consultants if extra treatment is needed in stricter zones.

Installation and ancillary materials

Fire performance depends on adhesives, underlay and skirting too. Align the full material schedule with GC, designer and carpet supplier before install.

Key quality control points for carpet surface installation:

Substrate preparation

The substrate must be flat and clean—no pits, pockmarks or cracks. Low spots should be filled level with cement mortar before install.

Cutting dimensions

After cutting, each carpet run should be about 20 mm longer than the room length. Width is measured after trimming the edges; mark and cut the edges accordingly.

Gripper strip fixing

When fixing with gripper strips, install strips around the room perimeter 10–20 mm from the corners, secured to the substrate.

Backing seams

Join carpet on the backing by sewing or tape. Joints must be firm and flat. After joining, trim uneven pile on the face at the seam with an electric edger.

Power stretching and modular layout

Use a power stretcher to tension the carpet in both directions, section by section, until flat and tight. Force must be moderate—too much can tear the carpet, too little leaves ripples. Work progressively. For modular tiles, lay a cross control pattern at the room centre first, then work outward from that grid.

Anti-static performance describes how synthetic carpet accumulates and discharges static electricity from surface friction in use. Untreated man-made fibres readily build static charge, which can discharge when it reaches a threshold. Static attracts dust and, in sensitive environments, can affect equipment such as computers. By fibre type:

Polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene fibre is inherently anti-static.

Nylon

Anti-static carbon filaments are blended during manufacturing, giving permanent anti-static performance.

Carpet accounts for more than half of global floor covering sales; China produces over 100 million square metres of machine-made carpet each year. Yet few Chinese homes use carpet despite rising living standards—largely because of the myth that carpet breeds dust mites and harms health. We present scientific evidence to set the record straight.

Is carpet harmful to health?

A 1994 Environ Corporation assessment of carpet composition and emission safety in Arlington, Virginia found that chemical analysis of carpet materials shows their ingredients do not affect human health.

Does carpet breed green or white mould?

Green and white mould grow only in extremely damp, dirty conditions. Poor cleaning and maintenance can allow mould on carpet—as on any surface, even window glass. Mould growth reflects excessive moisture, not carpet itself.

Does carpet cause allergies?

US EPA research shows carpet reduces airborne particles. Carpet acts as a filter, trapping dust, pollen, mould spores, mites and other allergens so they do not circulate freely. Regular vacuuming removes dust and mite allergens from the pile. With proper care, carpet does not cause allergy—it helps clean the air.

Can carpet backing latex cause allergic reactions?

Latex allergy relates to proteins in natural rubber latex. Carpet is made from non-toxic materials; broadloom backing uses synthetic latex, which is unrelated to natural latex allergy.

How should asthma patients install carpet?

German experts advise allergy and asthma patients to avoid adhesive full-spread installation where possible, as some adhesives may contain formaldehyde.

Solution dyeing adds colour during extrusion so pigment runs through the fibre. It resists fading and heavy cleaning—ideal for commercial traffic. All BR series use solution-dyed polyester.

ASTM E84 Class A is a widely recognized flame-spread rating for offices, hotels, retail and most commercial public spaces. Always follow project fire design specs.

Install adhesive-free (tab backing) or with glue. Vacuum regularly; replace individual tiles when stained or worn. Use entrance matting and inspect high-traffic zones periodically.

Place pads under furniture legs or move furniture periodically. For heavily worn areas, use protective covers or rotate tiles to spread wear. Dust collects in the pile—vacuum regularly in the direction of the pile to keep the carpet clean.

Experts recommend vacuuming at least once a week. Pure suction, beater-bar and rotating-brush vacuums suit cut-pile carpets; loop-pile carpets should be cleaned with suction-only machines. On the final pass, always vacuum in the pile direction.

Never use toothed or sharp-edged tools—they damage face fibres. If pile becomes matted or reversed, wipe with a clean towel dampened in hot water, comb straight, then steam-iron through a damp cloth following the pile direction to restore the surface.

What is polyolefin elastomer (POE)?

Polyolefin materials are thermoplastic resins produced by copolymerising ethylene with α-olefins. Burgunie selects Dow POE, metallocene-catalysed ethylene–octene copolymer, whose performance exceeds many conventional elastomers.

• Dimensional stability: minimal growth in heat and humidity to avoid buckling; minimal shrinkage in cold dry conditions to keep seams tight

• Indoor air quality: meets VOC standards per local regulations and client specs
• Transport heat resistance: trailers can reach 60–80 °C in summer; backing needs adequate tensile strength
